The “Beach Conversation” series responds to the transformation of flotsam and jetsam on the shoreline. The softening and etching of surfaces wrought by sea and shore on manufactured objects embodies a dynamic dialogue between man and nature.
The paintings here, in particular, explore the degradation of drink cartons by the constant battering of the waves.
The graphics on the outside of the carton disappear first, followed by an etching away of the foil lining. The ensuing marks made are similar in character to patterns observed in nature – a repossession of man-made objects by the sea.
